Stamford Considers Limiting Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers

In 06903, the drone of leaf blowers is a near-constant companion, even in winter sometimes as some folks will blow light snow off decks and walkways.

From the Stamford Advocate:

Proposed amendments to the city’s municipal noise ordinance, slated for discussion Jan. 24 by the Board of Representative’s Legislative and Rules Committee, could place slight limits on the machines’ use and increase fines for breaking the rules. Democratic representatives from districts 20, 16 and 19 submitted the measure in August. The proposal would limit leaf-blower usage – previously exempt from Stamford’s noise control ordinance – to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

Butternut Lane Home Destroyed in Fire

As reported on Patch:

A North Stamford home was destroyed after a fire broke out shortly before 6 a.m., Friday, according to the Stamford Fire Department. No one was home at the time of the fire, and no injuries to fire personnel were reported. According to a spokesperson, the fire “quickly consumed” the entire home before the structure was “completely lost.”

A scary situation, and a good reminder to change your smoke detector/alarm batteries twice a year (normally when you change your clocks). If an alarm is “chirping,” replace the batteries immediately. And if it’s got non-replaceable batteries (e.g., a “10 year alarm”) it’s time to change the alarm/detector.

“Bear With Us” (More Sightings in the Area)

Our neighbors in New Canaan have reported a foraging bear, “likely looking for food in bird feeders and garbage cans, according to authorities.” Some may recall North Stamford bear sightings in the early days of the pandemic, and we’re sure there have been a few since.

As the article suggests, “any bear sightings should be reported to Animal Control as well as the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s website.” Good advice!

2023 Recycling Holiday Schedule

The 2023 holiday schedule for recycling (and sanitation) was recently released by the City of Stamford.

The good news is that it looks we have nothing to consider until Thanksgiving: recycling will be picked up on the regular schedule for all holidays through Veterans Day. The first “one-day schedule push” is for Thanksgiving Day, and the entire week of Christmas.
